In our main project (“Study Hall”), which takes place directly on the Discord server, there are various roles. You can choose multiple roles, but at least one.
These are our main roles:
Translator (tr) #
As a translator, you’ll translate biblical texts into Toki Pona. Your goal is to create a translation that receives approval (seal) from both a proofreader and a language specialist.
Proofreader (pr) #
As a proofreader, you review a translator’s work for correct Toki Pona usage and provide constructive feedback. This includes checking grammar, word choice, and overall clarity. To take on this role, you must be an experienced Toki Pona speaker. That’s why you initially start as a candidate for this role and work alongside an experienced proofreader. Once your skills meet the required standard, you’ll be promoted to a full proofreader.
Language specialist (ls) #
While translators aren’t required to work directly from the original Hebrew and Koiné Greek texts, we still evaluate our translations against them. Our goal is to stay as faithful to the source as possible.
This is where the language specialist comes in (for Hebrew and Koiné Greek). To qualify for this role, you must have sufficient knowledge of at least one of these languages to assess whether the Toki Pona translation accurately conveys the original meaning.
Footnote taker (ft) #
The footnote taker role comes into play whenever the translation process requires adding explanatory notes. This is necessary in cases where:
- The original text is ambiguous,
- An interesting discussion occured during the translation process,
- Translator, proofreader, language specialist can’t agree upon one single version, or
- The translation needs extra context to be properly understood.
Like other specialized roles, you’ll start as a candidate and must apply before taking on this responsibility.
